The Pawsitive Influence: Why I Love Raising My Child With A Dog
I may be biased as a woman who grew up surrounded by animals and who these days has the constant shadow in the shape of a golden retriever, but in my own personal opinion, the role of pets, particularly dogs, in a child's life cannot be overstated.
The companionship, unconditional love, and valuable life lessons that dogs offer can have a profound impact on a child's development. In this blog post, we'll explore the numerous benefits of children growing up with dogs that I have witnessed in myself (thanks memory) and my child.
Companionship and Emotional Support:
Dogs are known for their unwavering loyalty and unconditional love. Having a furry friend by their side provides children with constant companionship and a sense of security. The bond formed between a child and their dog can be a source of emotional support, helping them navigate the ups and downs of life with a trusted confidant.
Responsibility and Routine:
Owning a dog teaches children valuable life skills such as responsibility and routine. They learn to feed, groom, and exercise their canine companions, instilling a sense of accountability from a young age. This responsibility can translate into better time management and organizational skills as they grow. In theory.
I'm not exactly precise evidence of this, but I can see something valuable in Leo as he and Noah grow together.
Physical Activity and Outdoor Play:
In an era of screens and sedentary lifestyles (of which i somewhat subscribe to, fret thee not), dogs encourage physical activity and outdoor play. Children with dogs are more likely to engage in activities like playing fetch, going for walks, or simply running around in the garden. This not only keeps them active but also promotes a healthier lifestyle.
Social Development:
Dogs are natural icebreakers and can facilitate social interactions for children. When out for walks or at the park, kids often strike up conversations with other dog owners, fostering social skills and helping them make new friends or at the least, be introduced to the many shapes of people outside of their circle, but with a confident topic to interact with. Additionally, caring for a dog promotes empathy and compassion, essential qualities for building positive relationships.
Stress Reduction and Mental Health:
Numerous studies have shown that the presence of dogs can reduce stress and anxiety levels in both children and adults, and myself and my son are certainly sources to show this absolutely checks out!
For kids, having a dog to pet and cuddle with can be incredibly soothing, providing comfort during challenging times. This can contribute to improved mental health and emotional well-being.
Learning About Life and Loss:
While the loss of a pet is undoubtedly a painful experience, it also teaches children about the cycle of life and the importance of coping with grief. It's an opportunity for parents to guide their children through difficult emotions and provide valuable life lessons about love, loss, and resilience. We have lost a pet cat in Leo's lifetime, and in these past years we have welcomed and said goodbye to a number of wider family 'pack' canines. You never get used to it, but it nurtures a beautiful empathy and softness if memory that no one can deny.
